The year was 1998 and Miramax s poker movie Rounders, starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton, made a paltry 23 million at the box office. Fortunately for us, the movie was ahead of its time. Soon after the film s release, the world of poker changed drastically. The invention of card cameras and the 2003 5 million Main Event victory of everyman Chris Moneymaker, who cites Rounders as one of his biggest influences, made the game of poker boom in a huge way. In 1999, the year that Damon s Rounders character would have played in the World Series Main Event, 393 people competed and the winner made 1 million. Seven years later, 8, 773 competed in the same event with the winner taking home 12 million. So though Rounders was a theatrical bust, the poker boom made it a home video smash, grossing 70 million in profit for Miramax. The film was recently on a list of catalog titles Miramax was hoping to sequelize along with The Weinstein Company and this week Harvey Weinstein himself, a producer of the original movie and former head of the studio that released it, said he s still trying to get a sequel to Rounders made. He s shown a similar aversion to Blu-ray with only a handful of his films Saving Private Ryan, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds available on the high definition discs. Those tides seem to be turning though, as in a recent interview with Ain t It Cool News tied to the upcoming 36th anniversary of Jaws, Spielberg said they re currently working on a Blu-ray of that 1975 hit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there is persistent buzz that it has fallen flat among consumers. Still, major filmmakers are continuing to stand up against the service, probably because as the summer season wears on, the selections will get better than the currently, and soon to be, available Sucker Punch or Battle: Los Angeles. Previously, filmmakers like James Cameron, Michael Bay, Peter Jackson and more signed an open letter written by the National Association of Theater Owners vehemently attacking this service and now Christopher Nolan, Jon Favreau, Quentin Tarantino, M. They d recently released The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin but after the quality of those films, a follow-up seemed impossible. However, The Lion King delivered big time and to this day remains one of Disney s most successful films of all time. Though it had a very solid DVD release in 2003, that disc is now out of print so Disney will officially re-release the film not only on Blu-ray, but on 3D Blu-ray later this fall.
