If you have a player without up conversion, movies play in a smaller box unless you zoom them. I bought a Blu Ray copy of the new Startrek to compare to the DVD I already had. I found that the DVD looked great! When comparing directly with Blu Ray, the Blu Ray is also great, a little better but probably not enough better to make a big difference to me. I am thrilled that these inexpensive Sony Players do so well and that I don t feel the need to replace over 1000 DVDs in my collection! We liked the Sony enough that we bought another to replace the OPPO non BluRay player in our living room. Both Sony s work perfectly! We have been holding out for awhile on Blue Ray, using our xbox 360 for dvd s. We bought this player and we love it. First movie we bought was Avatar, and it almost looks better than the theatre. Took a little bit to get used to working it, but once we did, it was worth the money. Even our regular dvd s look great! I would recommend this player highly. All the features work as expected, not sure why some people are complaining about netflix streaming. it works smooth for me, able to stream HD shows. maybe it s bandwidth issue. However the interface is not as good as PS3 netflix browsing. you have to add items to your instant queue and they immediately show up on the player. one thing which is surprisingly good is the speed of this player. also i have a sony hdtv player and one remote is able to control both player and tv which i think is very kool also all youtube videos run adfree on the tv. overall i thnk the player rocks. This is my first Blu-ray player, so I don t have much to compare it to. That being said, this is a great player. Blu-ray videos have a crisp image, vibrant color, and amazing detail. Standard DVDs using upscaling technology have a noticably improved picture. I have this unit paired with a Sony Bravia 32 LCD TV via HDMI and I really appreciate not having to manually select the video source; it switches to the Blu-ray input as soon as I turn on the player. I ve been a Netflix subscriber for about a year now and have been watching the streaming videos through my XBox, but that requires a separate XBox Live gold membership with a 49 annual fee. Now that I can watch the same videos using the Blu-ray player at no extra cost, I won t be renewing that membership. My only complaint, and this may be true of other players as well, is the load time for Blu-ray movies. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. As always, Amazon s order fulfillment and delivery are top-notch.
